GE14 Made History! And Here Are 5 Moments That Contributed To It.

GE14 is finally over!

But as the country rebuilds itself, here is a quick recap of 5 things that made the 14th Malaysian General Election historic.

1. DUH… The Opposition WON!

Since Independence in 1957, the BN coalition – which consist of UMNO, MCA and MIC – has been the ruling party if Malaysia.

That’s an astounding 61 YEARS!

But on the 9th of May, the Malaysian Political winds have shifted. This lead to a historic –and long-awaited – win by the Opposition, i.e Pakatan Harapan. And by no small margin either.

Democracy at its finest.

2. We have the Youngest MP and the Oldest Prime Minister in Malaysia History.

Age was never a factor when it came to Malaysian Politics.

GE14 saw the rise of young voters and the inauguration of the youngest Malaysian MP.

P. Prabakaran – who is a law student – became the youngest Elected Malaysian MP at 22 years and 3 months of age.

Pssstt… The record was previously held by our ex-Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak (he was 22 years and 7 months when he was elected)

We have the oldest Prime Minister in the World!

At 92 years old, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be the world’s oldest Prime Minister.

But we all know that age isn’t a factor as he is still as sharp as a tack, with his wit and quick comebacks.

3. Mini Blackout 2.0 d Did (Allegedly) Happen

Remember all those jokes about Blackout 2.0 and the press release by TNB that it would not happen?

Well, according to the China Press and the Facebook of Pakatan Harapan candidate, Juwairiya Zulkifli, Blackout 2.0 did happen!

Well, luckily someone decided to prepare beforehand with some torchlight

4. #PulangMengundi Happened

Remember our article a few weeks ago?

Well, despite all our differences – from race, religion to politics – Malaysian banded together when the midweek polling days were announced.

From Law firms reaching out to other employers to help ensure their employees’ voting rights – to Malaysian carpooling or offering money to perfect strangers:

A proud moment to be Malaysian

And finally…

5. We Made International Headlines… For All The Right Reason

As Malaysians, we have a sad familiarity with making International headlines for all the wrong reasons.

From 1MDB scandal to the disappearance of flight MH370; being part of bad international headlines have been a frequent occurrence the past few years.

But now, at the very least, we can lift our heads high. As we have made international headlines, for all the RIGHT reasons.

An amazing time to be alive and part of Malaysian History.

What do you think? What other historic GE14 moments did we miss?
